Meet Dr. Keeney

Oral surgeon Kanyon R. Keeney, D.D.S., Richmond VAKanyon R. Keeney, D.D.S. received his D.D.S. and graduated with honors at the Medical College of Virginia in 1984. While at MCV service he served as President of his Class every year and Student Body President in his senior year. He was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Society and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, as well as received the Theodore Glenn Scholarship, Alpha Omega Scholarship Award, and the ASDA Certificate of Service. He was also awarded a legislative externship in Washington by the ADA in his junior year. Dr. Keeney obtained an early externship in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at The Jackson Memorial Hospital Trauma Center in Miami.

Dr. Keeney completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1987 where he served as Chief Resident. As a resident, he coauthored several articles in surgery and was the first resident at the University of Pennsylvania to place dental implants.

Today, Dr. Keeney is a partner in Drs. Niamtu, Alexander, Keeney, Harris, Metzger, Dymon and Associates. He maintains a practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a concentration in implant surgery. He has placed several thousand implants in the past twenty years and has attended several hundred hours of additional training and updates in the latest technology in dental implants. He is a Diplomate in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow in the American Association of Oral Surgeons and American Society of Dental Anesthesia and became the first active Board Certified Oral Surgeon in Virginia to become a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantology. He is also actively involved in implant training of students and residents at the Medical College of Virginia.

As a cofounder of the Implant Forum of Virginia, Dr. Keeney has worked to bring advanced implant techniques to the Richmond Dental Community. He is a frequent lecturer and active in the use of 3-Dimensional CAT scan technology in implant treatment. He is committed to excellence in dental implant surgery.

Oral Surgeon Dr Keeney and family, Richmond VAThe highlight of Dr. Keeney's life is his family. He is married to the love of his life, Michele Keeney, and has three children ages 7, 10, and 15. His interests and passions are diverse. While at the University of Connecticut, he obtained his B.S. in biochemistry. He played varsity football and worked as a DJ at a regional FM station for four years. Outside of his family and work, his primary passion is community service. Dr. Keeney has been actively involved in the Big Brothers of America Program for over 21 years. He was a Big Brother to four Little Brothers from 1978 to 1998 in both the Richmond and Philadelphia areas. He subsequently served on the Richmond Big Brothers Board of Directors for five years and eventually became Regional President for Big Brothers serving on the National Board with two U.S. Senators and NFL great, Lynn Swann.

Oral Surgeon Dr. Keeney, overseas medical missionsEach month Dr. Keeney volunteers his time locally at the Crossover Clinic, a free medical clinic in Richmond. He has also served in seven different overseas medical missions with teams from Needle’s Eye Ministry. He has had the opportunity to treat hundreds of patients in the poorest parts of Cambodia, Guatemala, Belize and Haiti. He plans to continue medical Mission trips to Port au Prince Haiti on a recurring basis.

Dr. Keeney has a brother who is an attorney in Richmond. His father, a retired Air Force fighter pilot, lives with his mother in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia.
