Meet Dr. Watson

Oral Surgeon Dr. Watson, Richmond VA

Dr. D. Omar Watson was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He decided at a young age to become a dental professional due to the positive experiences he had at his dental visits as a youth. While in high school, experience was gained by performing two consecutive general dental externships in his upper classman years.

After graduating from Grand Rapids City High School with honors, he received the most prestigious Medallion Academic Scholarship to attend Western Michigan University. Some highlights of college included organizing an Oral Cancer Screening for his senior thesis, Volunteer of the Year, and Brother of the Year for his fraternity - Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. While enjoying college life, Dr. Watson focused enough to graduate from the Lee Honor’s College, obtaining a bachelors degree in Biomedical Sciences.

Subsequently, Dr. Watson attended University of Michigan School of Dentistry.  He maintained a good academic track while participating in the honor council, research, various dental societies, and multicultural affairs. He was the first student to receive the Ida Gray Award for encouraging multicultural ideals. Dr. Watson’s interest in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery was sparked during a rotation in the Oral Surgery Department while in training as a dental student. He was blessed to pursue this aspiration as an intern at Detroit Receiving Hospital, after graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2001.

The following year, he was accepted in the Medical Doctoral - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Detroit Receiving Hospital of the Detroit Medical Center. The program was very demanding with additional affiliations with Henry Ford Health System, St. Johns Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan. During training, he also completed his MD degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine as well as an internship in General Surgery.

Dr. Watson joined the practice of Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery in 2008 with Drs. Niamtu, Alexander, Keeney, Harris, Metzger, Dymon, and Wlodawsky. Won over by an excellent group of doctors, warmer weather, and southern hospitality, he has made the Richmond Metro area his home to practice the full scope of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He sees patients at the Southside (Huguenot) and Brandermill offices.

With his boyish looks, Dr. Watson tends to have a soothing rapport with adolescent and teenage patients. But conversely, enjoys managing medically compromised patients. His practice professional interests include all aspects of surgery, including dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant surgery, orthognathic surgery, trauma, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.  He regularly lectures on many of these topics to colleagues and aspiring professionals.

Dr. Watson is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Furthermore, he is a member of the American Dental Association, and the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Watson is a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, Richmond Academy of Medicine (RAM), and is a board member of the Centralized Credential Verification Services, Inc (CCVS). Finally, while he considers himself a mentor to any youth he contacts, formally he is a mentor at the University of Richmond for the Oliver Hill Scholar Program.

When not at work, Dr. Watson balances his life by spending time with his wife and two beautiful children. He also has a love for good music, travel, sports, time with friends, and church activities.
