Wisdom Teeth Richmond VA

Wisdom teeth can develop normally, but when there isn’t enough room for them to emerge properly, they may become impacted, grow at an angle, or affect nearby teeth and gums. At Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery, our oral surgeons provide evaluation and treatment throughout the greater Richmond area, helping patients understand whether their wisdom teeth can be monitored or may need treatment.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final set of molars to develop. They are located at the very back of the mouth and typically begin developing during the teenage years, with changes continuing into early adulthood.

Some wisdom teeth come in normally and remain healthy. Others may not have enough room to emerge fully, may develop at an angle, or may remain partially or completely impacted beneath the gums or jawbone.

Because wisdom teeth develop differently from person to person, they do not all require the same approach. Some can simply be monitored, while others may need treatment if their position or development begins to affect nearby teeth, gums, or overall oral health.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

A wisdom tooth is considered impacted when it does not fully emerge into its normal position. Impacted wisdom teeth may remain partially or completely beneath the gums or jawbone and can sometimes contribute to pain, infection, difficulty cleaning the area, or problems affecting neighboring teeth.

Reasons Wisdom Teeth May Need to Be Removed

Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. When they come in normally, remain healthy, and can be kept clean, they may simply be monitored over time. Removal may be considered when their development, position, or condition begins to create concerns.

Not Enough Room to Erupt Normally

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, and there may not be enough room at the back of the mouth for them to come in properly. A tooth may remain partially or completely impacted, or develop at an angle rather than erupting into a functional position.

Pain, Swelling, or Repeated Irritation

Discomfort in the back of the mouth, swelling, tenderness, or recurring irritation around a wisdom tooth may indicate that the tooth should be evaluated. Symptoms can develop when a wisdom tooth is only partially erupted or when the surrounding tissue becomes difficult to keep healthy.

Difficulty Keeping Wisdom Teeth Clean

Their location at the very back of the mouth can make wisdom teeth difficult to brush and floss effectively. If a tooth cannot be kept clean or healthy, your oral surgeon may recommend treatment rather than continued monitoring.

Concerns That May Not Cause Symptoms

Wisdom teeth do not always cause noticeable symptoms. An examination and X-rays may identify concerns related to their position or development before they become painful, which is one reason evaluation can be helpful even when a wisdom tooth does not currently hurt.

Whether wisdom teeth should be monitored or removed depends on the individual patient. If removal is recommended, our wisdom teeth removal page explains treatment, anesthesia, preparation, and what to expect on the day of surgery.

When Is the Best Time to Evaluate Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are often evaluated during the mid-teen years, before they have fully emerged. At this stage, an oral surgeon can see how the third molars are developing and whether there appears to be enough room for them to grow in normally.

There is no single age when everyone needs wisdom teeth treatment. Some wisdom teeth develop normally and can be monitored, while others may benefit from removal based on their position, development, and the potential issues they may cause.

When removal is appropriate, the teen years and early twenties can be an advantageous time for treatment. At this stage, the roots may still be developing, and the surrounding jawbone is generally less dense. As wisdom teeth continue to develop, their roots become longer, and the jawbone becomes denser, which can make treatment and recovery more involved later in adulthood.

During an evaluation, the oral surgeon reviews X-rays and examines the position of the wisdom teeth, the development of their roots, whether there is enough room for them to erupt normally, and how they relate to nearby teeth and surrounding structures. These findings help determine whether the teeth can continue to be monitored or whether treatment may be appropriate.
